One highlight of my exchange studies in Kushiro was the opportunity to visit the city mayor. Although I felt a little nervous before meeting him, the mayor was incredibly kind, friendly, and welcoming to all of us. It was a great honor to be invited to the city office and take part in this official visit. What made the meeting even more special for me was when the mayor mentioned that he liked Moomin, a famous character from Finland. As a Finnish student, this made me very happy and proud of my home country. I was also honored to present him with a small gift, and I was truly touched by his kindness and warm hospitality. What’s more, an article about our visit was featured in the local daily news, which was exciting for everyone. It’s a meaningful memory from my time in Kushiro that I will always cherish.

The courtesy visit to the Mayor of Kushiro was a memorable experience. We received a warm welcome, making us feel honored. At first, I felt a little shy because of the newspaper reporters who were present, but the atmosphere quickly became relaxed. The Mayor was friendly and kind, making it easy to talk with him. He even gave us souvenirs, which was a lovely gesture. Additionally, he recommended some great local attractions to visit. Overall, it was a pleasant and meaningful experience, leaving a positive impression of both the city and its leadership.

I went on a visit to meet the mayor of Kushiro, and it was a truly special experience. He was very kind and welcoming to everyone. During the visit, I had the chance to say a few words to him, and I told him how grateful I was to be there. He smiled and thanked me warmly. After that, we took a group photo together to remember the moment. Meeting the mayor made me feel honored and happy. It was a short but meaningful encounter, and I felt really grateful to have the opportunity to meet such a nice leader.

On Monday, May 19, we took Sensei’s car to Kushiro City Hall to meet the mayor of Kushiro. At first, we waited in the reception room, and then moved to the meeting room where we met the mayor. After the initial greetings, we introduced ourselves to the mayor one by one. When it was my turn, I introduced myself in Japanese. I told the mayor my name, that I was from Thailand, and that I was currently studying electrical engineering in my second year at the Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology. I also said that I enjoyed my daily life at Kushiro Kosen, that I loved the weather here, and that Japanese people were very kind. After I finished, the mayor complimented me on how fluent my Japanese was. After the self-introduction, I gave the mayor a gift—durian chips from Thailand. The mayor then asked who wanted to work in Japan in the future. I raised my hand, and he said, “Please come back to Kushiro again next time.” After that, all the international students took a group photo with the mayor. We also met a Thai woman, Cherry, who worked there in the tourism department. She gave us her Facebook page where she shared information about Kushiro in Thai language.

On the city tour, we left early by bus and passed the beautiful red Akkeshi Bridge on the way. Our first stop was the Aikappu Museum of Natural History, which displayed stuffed animals and preserved sea creatures. We then moved to Nenohi Park, full of blooming cherry blossoms, where we enjoyed a delicious oyster fried rice lunch box and took photos. Next, we visited Akkeshi Gourmet Park, which had a mini-aquarium, an observatory, and souvenir shops. Lastly, we were dropped off near the port, where we were free to explore the city. I chose to eat dinner at a cozy Italian restaurant called Izumiya.

We went on a city tour to Akkeshi, a beautiful town located in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Akkeshi is well known for its high-quality oysters, which are considered some of the best in Japan. During our visit, we explored the coastal area and visited local oyster farms, where we learned about oyster cultivation and the town's long tradition of oyster farming. The sea breeze, scenic views, and peaceful atmosphere made the experience unforgettable. We also had the chance to taste fresh oysters, which were incredibly flavorful. The locals were friendly and welcoming. Overall, the trip to Akkeshi was educational, relaxing, and delicious.

It was a really foggy day. Something I had never seen before in Thailand, I thought it was cool. Even though other people said the weather was really bad. It did not bother me at all. We first went to Akkeshi - Aikappu, and saw a bear (stuffed) and Deers (real). The walkway to the cliff was surreal. I want to go back in time to see the view again. Next we went to Akkeshi Sakura - Kaki Matsuri, the blooming sakura’s view is really something to die for. As well as the food that was provided for us there, absolutely top tier.

We participated in a tour organized by Kushiro KOSEN and visited the Aikappu Natural History Museum with a group of Japanese students. At the museum, I saw a variety of animal specimens, including bears, birds, and snakes. After the museum, we visited Cape Aikappu nearby. Although it was foggy on that day and the view wasn't completely clear, the scenery was still beautiful. I managed to take some good photos. Later, we went to Nenohi Park, where there was a local festival held around May 17th. The festival featured a variety of seafood such as shellfish, oysters, and shrimps. I also played some festival games, including a shooting game where I won a single candy. It was a fun and unique cultural experience.
6.Practical Report
Report by H.K. (TUAS)
Project Title: Robotics project for Kushiro KOSEN
My project for Kushiro KOSEN has three different parts. First, I make a translation of the manual for the robot I will be using later on from Japanese to English. This manual will be used for future exchange students also. Second, I will be designing a robotic hand with CAD and 3D printing it, and creating a program for transporting chicken wings from a table to paper cups. And lastly, I will be making a program for a small game with the robot for the open campus day to entertain the visitors that come there.
Report by C.N. (KMITL)
Project Title: Person Identification Using Raspberry Pi
My project is to identify individuals by using Raspberry Pi 4 and provide real-time feedback based on the identification result. Overall, the LED feedback output will light up in BLUE if there is a recognized face or registrant. Otherwise, it will light in RED. The program uses the Haar Cascade classifier, which is a machine learning algorithm used for object detection, particularly in images and videos, to detect the face and collect the result which is separated by date and individual. In the end, I also added the "Attendance Check System" to show the data output more clearly on the local website.
Report by M.N. (TNI)
Project Title: Electromagnetic Wave Theory
During my study at Kushiro Kosen, I conducted a research project on electromagnetic wave theory in the electrical engineering department. I began by studying textbook materials, focusing on Maxwell’s equations and electromagnetic waves in a vacuum. In class, Katou-sensei explained the Poynting vector, wave equation, and plane waves by deriving equations and explain their physical meanings. Sensei also drew picture during lectures, which greatly enhanced my understanding. At the end, I presented what I had learned, which boosted my confidence. I truly appreciated the effective teaching and the availability of Japanese textbooks. This experience left a lasting impression on me.
Report by D.T. (TNI)
Project Title: Research On Graph Theory
I am very pleased that I have been assigned with Akira Sensei who is mathematics enthusiast, and it was so fun learning with him. We discussed about graph theory in general and its importance with one specific problem i.e, tiling rectangle problem. Not only did I learn new knowledge with Sensei but I also got to learn about Japanese culture from him. I am very pleased with how he has treated me with humility over the course of our training. Thank You.

Project Title: Design a Collision detection system using Computer Vision
This project presents a collision detection system designed using computer vision techniques. The system estimates the distance to objects using 2D bounding boxes and known object dimensions, eliminating the need for depth sensors. A risk assessment module calculates the probability of collision based on distance, time-to-collision (TTC), object class, and screen position. The results are visualized with intuitive overlays using OpenCV, displaying bounding boxes, warnings, and real-time data. The system is modular, efficient, and suitable for real-time applications such as driver assistance, robotics, or surveillance. It offers a low-cost and scalable solution for enhancing situational awareness and safety.
