【フィンランド留学生滞在記】アク君最終レポート
この滞在記では、3名のフィンランド交換留学生が2012年4月5日に釧路に到着してからの寮生活や学校生活など、3ヵ月の留学体験とおして色々感じた日本での生活、学校生活などを語って頂きました。
既に3名はフィンランドに帰国しておりますが、彼らの最終レポートから、日本に来る前と来てから印象がどのように変わったか、また学校生活、北海道・釧路での生活や旅行で見聞した日本の文化などについても最後の感想をまとめてもらいましたので抜粋を掲載いたします。
3名分を掲載しましたので多少長文になってしまいましたが、要訳だけでもご一読ください。
Final Report ( Aku Hosio )
Preparation
I first got interested in Japan when I was still in high school and didn’t know what I wanted to do after graduation. After that I thought I’d like to go Japan someday and searched for schools that have exchange possibilities to Japan. I ended up with TUAS (Turku University of Applied Science), which introduced itself as having organized exchange possibilities to Japan. Since then I started studying Japanese and have studied 4 courses altogether until now. So I was quite well prepared for the language barrier as many people in Japan don’t speak English.
Also we were prepared by our school as they gave us Asian culture course as compulsory before going to Japan.
Before coming to Japan we couldn’t really prepare for what we are going to do during Internship as we received only Kosen’s teachers’ research list. We were told to if we have anything we could do or wanted to do relating to some teacher’s research, but most of us haven’t done this form of research before so it was quite hard to come up with something. I only knew that I wanted to do programming, but there wasn’t any research on the list that would for sure involve programming.
Studies
At first I thought I was going to do only research on lab hours two days a week, as that was what I heard before the internship started. When we the actual internship started it turned out to be quite different than I thought it would be. I got my research subject, in which I had a say of my own. I was first offered to do optimization research for local paper company’s machines, which would include a lot of Excel usage. As my main interest is in programming I asked if I could do a program oriented research and that’s what I got. Also I got to participate a punch of courses of my interest and some courses, which are not part of my field of study, but I was invited to join them by the courses teachers.

Study motivation and International understanding
In this chapter I compare my motivations towards studies, oversea studies and International understanding before-and-after the internship.
Before
My source of motivation towards studies is based on what I’m interested in. It’s hard for me to do things that I don’t see directly further me in becoming the kind of engineer and person I want to be. I applied to my current school because I wanted to become programmer and because the school has organized exchange possibilities to Japan. This kind of motivation source can be noticed in both my grades and choice of non-compulsory courses. My best grades are in studies of programming and Japanese language. Also I have a selection of non-compulsory courses and projects in both programming and Japanese language.
Before I even stepped a foot out of my country I have been thinking to go Japan as an exchange student twice while in my current school, first for an internship and second time as a normal exchange student, to study. Reason why I want to go twice is because my dream is to work in company that working together with Japanese or even work in Japan.
Oversea study and internship experience are highly regarded in Finnish companies, because it usually tells well one can adapt to new situations. This is the reason why many students in Finland are motivated to go abroad as exchange students. This also one of my reasons why I wanted to go Japan, but I wouldn’t go for only that reason, I need to be interested in my destination country.
I’m not a person who usually gives a lot of effort to studies after school time if I’m not especially interested in the subject at hand.
After
I am now more interested in participating research programs after doing research in Japan. As in Finland they are usually non-compulsory and you have to apply to them, people don’t do that so much, but after experiencing research in Japan I feel like taking part in one in Finland.Also I was surprised how hast I got used to Japanese style of overtime working after school/work hours. It didn’t feel like I gave any special effort it. After returning to Finland I am likely to feel kind of out of place as I don’t have chance to do overtime in school or there isn’t really anything to overwork with, like research. So I am probably going to give more effort to my daily studies as there is nothing else to overtime with.
After the internship my plans of coming to Japan as an exchange student for a second time hasn’t changed. I’m most likely to come again already sometime next year.
Attitude towards international studies
Many people are scared to do international studies or want to think that they don’t have to deal with international affairs while working in their home country. Also there are people how think one should go only study in English speaking country as it’s a language spoken in many countries. International studies are not only about language.
International studies are highly regarded in Finnish working life, an experience that will mostly like widen ones world view and can change a person really fast, in a good way. If you can adapt to completely new culture, one is well prepared to adapt many possible situations to come in working life.
Conclusion
During my internship I have learned a lot of Japanese culture and how a Japanese organization works. Japanese culture is strongly group oriented, both in school and work life.
I am satisfied with my first research/project about developing old Procon program further and I experienced the limits of C# programming language, which I have used the most until now. When it comes to fast graphic processing, C# needs to move a way of its principles, for example, principle of not using pointers.
This internship was a good experience. I think I have grown a lot as person and it will show in my studies back in Finland.
Impressions and remarks
Japanese are known for overtime working and low number of holidays. I had always thought when Japanese get use to overtime working, because I didn’t know they do that even in school.
It would be nice if in future KNCT could provide a list of possible research projects to do, so it would be easier to for students to prepare for the actual internship.

＜要訳＞
準備
日本に興味を持ったのは高校生の時でその時はまだ卒業後の進路を決めていませんでした。そのうちに日本に行きたいという気持ちが強くなってきたので、日本への留学制度があるトゥルク応用科学大学に入学し、日本語と４つのコースを学んで来ました。日本人があまり英語を話さないということは事前に知っていたので、そのことについても十分な準備ができました。また、大学側が必修科目としてアジアの文化を学ぶ機会を与えてくれたのもとても良かったと思います。
日本に行く前は釧路高専の先生方の研究リストをもらっただけでまだ自分達の研究課題を決めていませんでした。そのリストの中で何かやってみたいものがあればという話だったのですが、初めて見るものが多く研究の課題をすぐに考えるのは大変でした。プログラミングをやることだけは決めていたのですが、残念ながらリストの中に関連するものがありませんでした。
学習
日本に来る前は、研究室での研究は週２日しか時間がないと聞いていたのですが、思っていたこととはだいぶ異なることが分かりました。研究課題については自分の主張した分野の研究を認めてもらえました。最初はエクセルを多用する製紙工場の機械（発電機）の最適化に関する研究を提案されましたが、私の主な興味分野がプログラミングであることからプログラム関連の研究をすることで認めてもらいました。他にも専攻以外で興味があるコースも受けさせてもらえることになりました。

学習の動機と国際理解
ここではインターンの前と後での学習面での意欲、国際理解について話をします。
インターン前
学習の動機は、自分がその課題に興味があるかどうか、という所にあると思います。今の自分が将来エンジニアとして働いている姿や、理想とする人間になれている姿が想像できなければ興味を抱くことはできません。今の大学に応募した理由は、プログラミングの勉強ができるのと日本に留学できるシステムが整っていたからです。科目の中で成績が良かったのもこの2つでした。
私は大学にいる間に、最初はインターンシップとして、次は正規の留学生として二度日本に行くことをずっと考えていました。なぜなら私の夢は日本の方が働く会社で働くこと、さらに言えば日本で働くことだったからです。海外留学やインターンシップは適応能力が必要とされます。そのためフィンランドの企業では海外経験がとても高く評価されより多くの人の注目を集めるようになってきました。しかし、一番大切なのは自分が目指す国そのものに興味を持つことだと思います。私は自分の目の前の学習科目に興味がなければ勉強に努力を払わないタイプなので。
インターン後
日本での研究が終了し、研究プログラムに参加することにますます興味が湧いてきました。フィンランドでは研究は選択科目の一部で希望した人のみ受けることができるのですが、そのような人はあまり見たことがありません。私はフィンランドに帰っても何らかの研究には取り組みたいと思っています。
留学中に授業外の学習（残業）に慣れてしまったので自分でも驚いています。これは特に苦になることはありませんでした。フィンランドに戻って、学校で時間外の勉強の機会を持たなかったり、研究でハードに仕事をするようなことが全くないと、きっと何か場違いな感じを覚えると思います。その分これからは残業に替わる分として日々の勉強に努力を払おうと思います。留学前に目標としていた二度目の日本留学の目標はやはり変わっていません。すでに来年また来たいと思っています。
海外留学への心構え
多くの人は自国にいて国際情勢に無関心であったり、留学する必要がないと思っているかもしれません。中には世界共通言語である英語を学ぶために英語圏の国に行くべきだと考えている人もいます。しかし海外で勉強するのは決して語学だけではないはずです。
留学経験はフィンランドの社会で高く評価されています。なぜならその経験は世界観を広げ良い意味で自分を変えることが可能だからです。もし新しい文化に完全に適応できれば、社会に出てからもその能力が役に立つでしょう。
結果
留学中は、日本文化や組織について学びました。日本は学校でも会社でも集団的に行動する志向がとても強いと思います。
研究では、最初に古いプロコンのプログラムをさらに発達させることができ、次にC#プログラミング言語も限界まで学ぶことができ、大変満足しています。グラフィックの工程の速度を速くするには、ポインタを使わないなど、C#の原理を変える必要があると思います。
このインターンはとても良い経験となりました。人としても成長できましたし、フィンランドでの学習でも成果が出ると思います。
感想
日本人は残業好きで、休日も少ないと思われがちです。会社だけだと思っていましたが学校でもみんな遅くまで残っているのを目にしました。
これから釧路高専に留学する学生のために研究プロジェクトのリスト等を作成してもらえると、事前に準備が出来てよりスムーズだと思います。
